Community Based Tourism (CBT) is an opportunity and new way to understand lifestyles of each other, and sustainable tourism can develop quality of lives in a community.

ปัญหาสังคม

ที่มา/ความสำคัญโครงการ :

When we mention about slum Khlongtoey, many people will think about difficulty, destitution, and struggling against poverty of poor people in Bangkok.  
   
But how many people know what they do for living; what they think; and what they dream. We relatively look at them as an outsider, but do not touch and understand their life styles and do not learn from each other because we may not open our hearts for them. 
 
 Local Alike, a social enterprise using tourism to develop a community, want to be an agent to connect people, understanding, opportunities, and innovative solutions to understand each other’s lives. Local Alike believes that tourism can bring change and improve lives. 
 

Local Alike surveyed and studied possibility with the Duang Prateep foundation, who has a lot of experience of working with people in a Khlongtoey community, and found an opportunity to develop this community to become community based tourism, as they have strong components such as human resources, history, occupation, and kindergarten using a Montessori concept to teach people to escape from poverty. 
 
We believe if we can create CBT in this community, quality of their people’s lives will be improving because tourism is an important tool for development. To accomplish this goal, good management is a fundamental requirement to create a sustainable and effective community. Furthermore, people will change their paradigms in a long term if a community can be able to define itself. 
 

From our field trip, we can answer two questions: what do we do? and what do we do for? 
1. We believe that tourism by a community will gather people in Khlongtoey to present their community in different directions through a tourism activity designed by Khlongtoey people for Khlongley people. We believe that they can communicate a reality of society in different aspects. 
2. We believe that if we can create community-based tourism in a Khlongtoey community, people’s lives will be improved. Basically, tourism is a good tool for community development, but good and proper management is very important to effectively and sustainably develop a community. In addition, if a community can define itself, people’s paradigms in society will change in a long term. 

 

Join us to change "Khlongtoey" to become a community based tourism spot in the center of Bangkok.  

ประโยชน์ของโครงการ :

Short term (3-6 months)
1.Create a community leaders network. (at least 10 people)
2.At least 10-15 young leaders receive training.
3.At least 2 travel programs are ready to release to public.
4.At least 10 tourists joining this program understand local people’s lifestyles, structure of relations, exchange experience, and feel satisfied.
5.At least 10 families have a new job and more income from tourism, understand their values, and structure of relations in their community which could lead to paradigm shift.  
 
Long term (7-12 months)
1.Set up a mechanism and model to manage CBT in Khlong Toei.
2.At least 1,000 people follow this project on the Facebook or donate to a Tourism for Social Change project or join this trip to understand the Khlong Toei community more deeply. We believe that people will get inspired and make a difference in a long term.

 

420,000 Baht that we get from fundraising to support a Tourism for Social Change project will be paid back in 2 years and 4 months after releasing touring programs. 

กิจกรรมที่จะดำเนินโครงการ :

Fundraising  (15 October – 15 February 2015)
1.Prepare activities and study detail of stakeholders of this project.
2.Develop a plan and collaborate with the foundation and community.
 
Develop touring routes.
1.Design and develop touring routes.
2.Collect information and knowledge of this community.
3.Develop a local guide.
4.Train on being a tour guide and concepts of CBT.
5.On-site visit
6.Organize an activity to test trips in order to develop touring routes and PR activities (May 2015) by designing and planning a campaign through developing content, print media, VDO, PR in different channels, and online booking at  www.localalike.com.
7.Organize tourism for social change. (August 2015)

2.Veraboon Wisarsakul lecturer at faculty of social administration, Thammasart Univesity. (Adviser on community development)
