The Ingboon Foundation, based at Wat Thap Khlo (Suan Phra Phothisat) in Phichit Province, established a Palliative Care Center (สถานชีวาภิบาล) to look after ailing monks (Bhikkhus) who are bedridden or in the final stages of life. The aim is to ensure they receive proper care, are taken to doctor's appointments as scheduled, and are able to pass away peacefully in accordance with their wishes during their last days."

"Throughout its operation, the Foundation has not only cared for bedridden monks but has also extended its care to cover all monks, laymen (Ubasok), and laywomen (Ubasika) residing at the temple who are in good health or are considered high-risk. This assistance includes transportation to scheduled doctor's appointments or in the event of an emergency. The Foundation incurs significant costs to provide this care.

Social issues

"The current health problems facing monks often severely affect their physical well-being. This can lead to some monks having to leave the monkhood (disrobe) because they are unable to maintain their monastic discipline due to the inability of some temples to find a suitable caregiver. When they return home for relatives to care for them, they may also lack proper attention."

"Addressing this problem requires having a dedicated facility and the presence of a Phra Gilanupatthak (Patient Attendant Monk). A Phra Gilanupatthak is a monk whose duty is to care for ill or sick monks, as stipulated by the Vinaya (Monastic Rules) set forth by the Buddha in the Tipitaka. This role is crucial in promoting mutual care, helping the patient achieve both physical and mental comfort during their illness, especially in the final stages of life, so they may pass away with the dignity befitting a monk."

"5. Mediator for Worldly Matters: If an ailing monk has matters they wish to entrust to relatives or needs to communicate with external individuals, the Phra Gilanupatthak can assist in coordination to ensure everything proceeds smoothly."

Outcomes of the Care:

  • Helps the monks recover faster and regain better health.

  • Reduces both physical and mental suffering.

  • Is an act of loving-kindness and compassion.

"Caring for the physical and spiritual well-being of ailing monks is not solely the duty of the Phra Gilanupatthak, but is also a practice that everyone can adopt to create merit and goodness in life. Furthermore, it ensures that ailing monks can pass away with the dignity befitting a monk."

Approaches to addressing issues

  1. 1.Caring for the Ailing Monk's Physical Health: Assisting with basic duties such as preparing food, ensuring cleanliness, or dispensing medication to the sick monk. This also includes maintaining a suitable environment, such as preparing the bed, managing air quality, and preventing hazards that might endanger the patient.

  2. 2.Providing Encouragement and Mental Health Care: Engaging in Dhamma discussions to help the ailing monk reduce anxiety or distress, and cultivating peace of mind by guiding meditation practice or reflecting on the Dhamma concerning the impermanence of life.

  3. 3.Practicing Dhamma and Setting a Good Example: Performing duties with loving-kindness and selflessness, without regarding the task as a burden, and showing gratitude toward fellow monks (Sahadhammika) who have practiced the Dhamma together.

  4. 4.Assisting in Mental Preparation for Death: Helping the mind become calm and letting go of attachment to the aggregates (Sankhara). Encouraging the patient to contemplate impermanence and the nature of birth, aging, sickness, and death.
