The floods of 2024 caused extensive damage, especially in Chiang Rai Province, heavily affecting farmers, particularly those who lost their entire harvest. Among them, organic rice farmers, who produce only once per year, require particular assistance. Organic farming, which is eco-friendly but demands high care and has limited market reach, means these farmers can only replant next season with their crop ready for sale by December 2025. To assist them, the Department of Rice, The Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, The Thai Organic Trade Association (TOTA), Taejai.com, FOOD FOR GOOD, and The Cloud have collaborated to launch the “Moo Deng Rice Project: Supporting Flood Victim Farmers” We invite everyone to suppport advance production of rice from these affected farmers, providing them with funding to repair homes, restore fields post-flood, and invest in next year’s production. As a token, supporters will receive rice and a thank-you card featuring a drawing of Moo Deng, illustrated by Arirat thupthim, an Educational Media Officer of Khao Kheow Open Zoo.

Social issues

The floods in 2024 severely impacted multiple areas, especially in Chiang Rai Province, where farmers, particularly rice farmers, lost their entire yields. Organic farmers who cultivate rice once a year are among the most affected and require urgent support. These organic farming methods are eco-friendly but need significant care, have a narrow market, and, with only one annual harvest, cannot produce income until the next season. The organic rice can only be sold around December 2025.

The most affected areas in 2024 include Chiang Rai, leading the project to prioritize support for certified organic farmers in the province with networks in various areas and experience collaborating with public and private organizations, ensuring they can fulfill future crop deliveries to supporters.

The project supports two main farmer groups:

1.   Thung Tom Por Peng Community Enterprise Network in Thoeng District, Chiang Rai, is a diverse agricultural and livestock group (growing rice, vegetables, raising tilapia and pigs) that practices sustainable management. For example, they use rice straw in fish ponds to create plankton, while fish scraps are used for compost, and pig manure is added to rice fields. Waste is minimized, and product value is maximized. Led by new-generation farmer Pitchaya Phong Narongchai, the group includes 280 flood-affected families across two subdistricts, managing 1,300 rai (2,080 acres) of certified organic rice under Organic Thailand.

2.   Rak Thin Koet New Theory Farming Group operates a large organic rice field in Ban Dai Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai, with 10 flood-affected farming families managing 166 rai (265 acres) of organic rice.

Approaches to addressing issues

  1. 1. Rice Bag, 1 Kilogram • Donation Value: 200 THB per 1 kg bag • Benefits: Supporters will receive 1 kg of rice, a Moo Deng thank-you card with a message from the farmer. Shipping within Thailand is free.

  2. 2. Distribution of Funds • All primary income, excluding card printing, shipping, and payment processing fees, will be allocated to Thung Tom Porr Peng and Rak Thin Koet groups.

  3. 3. Supporters will receive Hom Mali 105 brown rice.

  4. 4. Supporters receive one card per kilogram, randomly selected from eight designs. Donating 8 kg will ensure all designs are received.

  5. 5. Supporters can designate delivery within Thailand only.

  6. 6. Optional Donation: Supporters can donate portions of their rice to schools in need in Thoeng District, Chiang Rai. FOOD FOR GOOD, under the Yuvabadhana Foundation, will ensure delivery as lunch provisions for schools, while supporters will still receive all designated cards.

  7. 7. International Supporters will receive cards shipped abroad but rice is available for Thailand-based addresses only, or they may donate their rice portion to schools.

  8. 8. Delivery Timing: Rice is expected to arrive between December 2025 and January 2026. Any delays will be communicated via email.

  9. 9. Support Online Until December 20, 2024: Direct support can also be made in-person at the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand booth (H30) at the Thailand event.

Operational Plan

  1. Immediate thank-you card dispatch to supporters.

  2. Fund disbursement to farmer representatives in January 2025 with local government witnesses.

  3. The Department of Rice will provide seeds for the next production round.

  4. By December 2025, farmers will send rice to supporters.
