Social issues
Muang Phan Subdistrict: Where Children Still Have Nowhere to Play or Create
“On weekends, kids in Muang Phan have nothing to do. Those who can afford it go to the city; those who can’t stay home, scrolling through their screens all day.”
Muang Phan Subdistrict in Phan District, Chiang Rai, lacks accessible public spaces for children and youth — places for learning, play, or creative weekend activities. This has led to two main challenges:

Children spend most of their free time at home on their phones.

Parents have no nearby public areas to take their kids for creative, family-oriented activities.
Most weekend programs are held in Chiang Rai city — over 40 km away — and often come with high travel and participation costs. As a result, many children miss out on opportunities to develop emotional, social, and creative skills through real-world experiences.
While some public areas such as sports fields and exercise zones exist, they mainly serve physical activities and are not designed to host creative or skill-based programs. There is still no dedicated space in Muang Phan where children can safely and independently explore, learn, and play.
Without accessible creative spaces, children in Muang Phan are left with limited choices — and limited opportunities to grow.

Approaches to addressing issues
With the idea of “Screen-Free Hour” — take a break from screens through creative activities and reconnect with the people who matter most.
Creating physical space: Transform Wat Rong Lot Temple into a community hub for creativity — a welcoming, accessible space where local families can join in designing and shaping creative activities for children and youth.
Continuous creative programs: Regular weekend activities such as art workshops, crafts, traditional games, and board games will help develop creativity, emotional intelligence, and social skills. The project also welcomes collaboration from community networks and local volunteers.
“Screen-Free Rules” initiative: Encouraging children, youth, and parents to unplug and spend more quality time together through fun, offline activities — strengthening family bonds while fostering imagination and joy.

Open the space and promote the creative hub to the local community in Muang Phan Subdistrict.

Conduct 20 weekend creative activities, rotating through workshops such as arts and crafts, traditional games, board games, and other programs designed to develop children’s creativity, social skills, and emotional intelligence.
