Scholarships for Children in Rural Thailand
Throughout rural Thailand, many young people are striving to overcome great obstacles to achieve their dream of pursuing a higher education at universities or technical colleges, in order to better themselves, and make a difference in their communities. Unfortunately, for most this is only a dream as the crippling poverty prevents this from happening.
To break this cycle, iCare Thailand Foundation has launched a Scholarship Program to give deserving students the chance to continue their education without financial worries. Scholarships are offered through three pathways:

Full university scholarships – covering tuition fees and living expenses

Technical college scholarships -- providing training for a career in a technical trade

iBecome Hospitality scholarships – a fast-track program that prepares students for real careers in the hospitality industry
This year, our goal is to support 50 students with life-changing scholarships
Chris Parker – RetiredWorkingForYou is partnering with iCare to help raise support so that more children can continue their education. Together, we aim to provide:

✅ 5 iBecome scholarships (15 month program in partnership with Payap University, Chiang Mai)
✅ 3 technical college scholarships

Social issues
Root Causes of the Problem
Family poverty
Many children in rural areas come from low-income families. Most of the family income goes toward daily living expenses, leaving little or no money for tuition, accommodation, or transportation to continue their education in the city.
Limited access to further education
While secondary schools may exist in remote areas, higher education—universities or technical colleges are usually located in urban centers, with high costs for tuition, living, and transportation. As a result, many bright students are forced to drop out.
Family responsibilities and lack of opportunities
Many families rely on their children to contribute to household income, making further education seem like a “luxury” and limiting opportunities for personal development.
Intergenerational poverty
When children cannot continue their studies, they often end up in low-paying, unstable jobs. Poverty is then passed from one generation to the next, creating a cycle with no clear way out.

Approaches to addressing issues
1. Selecting Students 1.1 We work with teachers, community leaders, and rural schools to identify children from disadvantaged backgrounds who are determined to improve their own lives and support their families. 1.2 Selection is based on motivation, attitude, leadership potential, along with academic performance and household circumstances (GPA is not the only factor). 1.3 Home visits and family interviews are conducted to better understand the child’s situation.
2.Providing Full Scholarships Covering tuition, living expenses, and other essential costs.
3.Finding the Right Educational Pathway Students are matched to the most suitable option: university, technical college, or iBecome (hospitality/career-focused program).
4.Mentorship and Support Staff and mentors provide guidance for both academic progress and daily life.
5.Career Placement After Graduation Students are connected with a network of partner organizations and companies to ensure real job opportunities after completing their studies.
Operational Plan
Selecting Students *Coordinate with schools and teachers in rural areas to identify children in need. *Conduct home visits, family interviews, and assess each child’s suitability.
Scholarship Award Ceremony and Preparation *Award full scholarships for university, technical college, or iBecome according to the plan. *Provide accommodation, study materials, transportation, and an emergency fund.
Monitoring and Mentorship (Throughout the Academic Year) *Track academic progress and living conditions each term. *Hold monthly meetings with scholarship students.
Internship and Career Placement (Final Year of Study) *Arrange internships with partner organizations, hotels, or relevant institutions. *Hands-on training with opportunities for job placement immediately after graduation.
Reporting *Prepare progress reports and stories of scholarship students. *Share with donors and the public to ensure transparency.
