Social issues

In 2019, the Chiang Mai Elderly Development Foundation and the Community Volunteer Association for Elderly Care in Chiang Mai City (CVAC-CM) initiated the "ADOPT A GRANNY" project. This project aimed to bring joy and assistance to elderly individuals who lacked caregivers, focusing on densely populated areas in the Chiang Mai municipal area. The volunteer team provided various services to more than 220 elderly people in the community.

The services included:

  1. On-site visits to talk and inquire about the well-being of the elderly.
  2. Health assessments, including weight measurement, blood pressure monitoring, height measurement, and BMI calculation to evaluate the risk of diseases.
  3. Providing advice on health care, cleanliness, nutrition, physical therapy, and improving living conditions.
  4. Addressing the challenges faced by the elderly in Chiang Mai.

As of 2019, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security revealed that Chiang Mai had a population of around 1.7 million, with over 310,000 individuals aged 60 and above, ranking third in the country after Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima. This significant elderly population faced various issues such as health, economic, social, and housing problems.

The Chiang Mai Elderly Development Foundation and CVAC-CM aimed to expand the "ADOPT A GRANNY" project to further assist elderly individuals in need. They sought support to provide essential items and nourishment to improve the quality of life for the elderly. The invitation for support included a request for contributions to cover the average cost of 350 Baht per month or 4,200 Baht per year per elderly person.

The items to be provided monthly included:

  1. Nutrient-rich meals for the elderly.
  2. Essential items such as adult diapers, 10 absorbent pads, and everyday medications like wound wash, antacid, alcohol, cotton pads, and bandages.

The initiative aimed to collectively care for the elderly and bring happiness to their lives. Several organizations and networks, including HelpAge International, CVAC-CM, Chiang Mai Municipality, social enterprise networks, and child-focused organizations, collaborated to make this project a success.

Approaches to addressing issues

  1. Visiting elderly in difficult circumstances, talk, inquire.

  2. Assess health of elderly with weight, blood pressure, height, and BMI for disease risk.

  3. Provide health advice on cleanliness, nutrition, physical therapy, and home improvements.

  4. Provide nutritionally balanced meals for the elderly. Ensure essential supplies such as wound care items (bandages, antiseptic, alcohol), common medications (pain relievers, acetaminophen), and daily necessities like tissues and cotton towels are available to support their daily life.

Operational Plan

  1. Volunteer in the community, including joining the Buddy Home Care team, to visit and collect basic information from elderly individuals with challenges. Conduct preliminary assessments, inquire about their needs, engage in conversations, address concerns, and assess the health status of the elderly in need.

  2. Tasked with gathering data, the team aims to collect information on the number of elderly individuals in each area. This includes assessing the assistance needs of elderly individuals facing challenges in each locality. Subsequently, the team will devise appropriate assistance plans based on the gathered information.

  3. Provide essential factors for the well-being of the elderly, including nutritionally appropriate meals, suitable living conditions, weather-appropriate blankets, necessary medications, and basic health check-ups. Collaborate with local organizations for effective coordination.

  4. Buddy Home Care staff and the Elderly Development Foundation, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, will conduct training sessions to impart knowledge to volunteer caregivers. The aim is to enhance their capabilities in providing continuous care for elderly individuals facing challenges. The training will focus on planning and implementing care strategies. Additionally, there will be five on-site assessments to monitor and evaluate changes in the elderly individuals over time.
