Education scholarship for foreign workers’ children – 400 baht that change life
Duration 1 year Area Khanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat province
Current donation amount89,940 THB
Khanom is the northernmost district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province. It is a place with rich natural and marine resources which have been providing income to local fishermen for a long time.
Today there are more than 1,000 foreign workers in the area, many of them are illegal labors. A research study shows that foreign workers living in Khanom district came to Thailand with their families including babies and young children. There are currently about 200 children (new born – 18 years old) in the area. They are either traveled from their home country together with their parents or were born in Thailand. Raks Thai Foundation has initiated a Learning Center project for foreign worker’s children since 2005. In the beginning there were about 80 students, however, the number has decreased to just 25 students overtime due to financial problems of the parents, which inevitably forced the children to leave school and to enter the illegal job market.
Raks Thai Foundation's Learning Center, Nakhon Si Thammarat province is acting like a foster home for these children and help integrate back to the state’s education system when they are ready.
“I left my dream behind to support my other 2 siblings”
Yeesip was a student at Raks Thai Foundation's Learning Center in 2009. She believes that good education will give her better opportunities in life. She does not want to end up being a labor worker like her parents. Sadly reality is not as beautiful as a dream. Her father had a new family and her mother had passed away too soon. Yeesip at the age of 16 had to leave school and start working to support the other younger siblings; Samsip and Nam-oy. With Yeesip’s hardwork and additional support from aid organizations, today Nam-oy can go to school. However, the future of Yeesip and Samsip are unclear.
1. To provide support to children of foreign workers in receiving standard education at local institutions 2. To provide shelter and safe-zone for children, to be the consultation and recreational center for the children 3. To act like an educational institution with a family-input content to provide life-skill knowledge and integration to new culture and social setting. 4. To raise awareness among private and public organizations about educational support needed for children of foreign workers
