Problem and Solution

Information from the Ministry of Public Health in Thailand in 2017 indicates a declining trend in the overall development of Thai children aged 0-5 years in each successive year. Furthermore, the rates are lower than the global health organization's statistics by more than 15 percent. Additionally, data from Mahidol University reveals that nearly 30% of Thai children aged 2-6 years experience behavioral issues indicative of deficiencies in Executive Function (EF) skills, which contribute to behavioral problems. There is a risk that these children may make misguided decisions, such as substance abuse or early pregnancy.

To address these issues, it is imperative to promote the cognitive development of early childhood, laying the foundation from an early age. This aligns with global research, emphasizing that early intervention has long-term benefits for both the individual child and society as a whole.

ICAP was established to address the aforementioned issues by enhancing the potential of children aged 2-6 years in early childhood development centers and schools. This is achieved through Active Learning management following the HighScope approach, which places the child at the center and promotes sensory development through lively and engaging play to enrich life experiences. The program involves training teachers who act as facilitators to encourage children to engage in hands-on activities based on the early childhood development curriculum, including other content such as developmental principles, positive discipline, health and environmental management, appropriate nutrition , and more.

To assess the outcomes for children, ICAP program collaborated with Mahidol University to evaluate the Executive Function (EF) skills of preschool children in 5 early childhood development centers in Lopburi province. The findings revealed that preschool children under ICAP program exhibited EF scores significantly higher than the national average. Among the project participants, those with EF scores below the standard were fewer than the national average, while those with EF scores above the standard were more prevalent compared to the national average.

As of now, ICAP encompasses over 120 participating educational institutions in Lopburi province and an additional 20 institutions nationwide. It reaches more than 9,000 preschool children. In this fundraising initiative, the project aims to expand its operations to 2 more early childhood development centers , extending its coverage to approximately 70 more preschool children.
