“Save Drop Out Students” (Your scholarships can save students from dropping out of schools) Project Progress Report

14 October 2022

The Education Development Fund Foundation (EDF) launched the fundraising program “Save Drop Out Students” through Taejai.com crowdfunding website from March 1st to July 31st2022, with a goal of generating 412,500 baht to provide scholarships to 150 Mattayom 2 (Grade 8) and Mattayom 3 (Grade 9) students (2,000 baht each) in the northeastern region of Thailand’s small rural schools. At the end of the project, EDF was able to raise 414,904 baht and provided scholarships to 151 students.

Prior to providing the scholarships, EDF worked with both the educational service area offices and the relevant schools to help select the needy Mattayom 2 (Grade 8) and Mattayom 3 (Grade 9) students. Selection criteria was based on documents and verification regarding each case.

Initially, an applicant’s letter about himself or herself is submitted, together with photo of an applicant and his house as well as information regarding the student's family income, etc.

Once confirmed and verified, EDF’s scholarship department checked out each student's bank account information before transferring the scholarship fund (In some cases, it may be transferred to the bank account of the school first). Once the scholarship fund has been deposited into the student's bank account, the teachers in charge of the scholarship program scan the bank account page showing the amount received and send it to the foundation's scholarship system as an evidence.

Moreover, the teachers in charge of the scholarship work keep possession of students’ scholar bankbook to ensure that the scholarship funds are solely spent for educational purposes.

On September 25th 2022, EDF had completed the transfer of all scholarships funds to 151 students.

List of “Save Drop Out Students” project scholarship comprises 44 Mattayom 2 (Grade 8) and 107 Mattayom 3 (Grade 9) students.

Ms. Supatra, Mathayom 3 (Grade 9), Ban Kae Yai School, Surin Province

“My family member includes my grandfather, grandmother, mother, elder brother and younger brother. My father and mother separated when I was in Grade 1. After that, my mother went to work in another province. Thus, I have lived with my grandparents whose income depended on hired farming.

When my brother grew up, he went to work in another province and sent us some money to help lighten up the burden on my family. When I was in Mattayom 1 (Grade 7), my mother returned home and took care of my younger brother, as my grandmother is very old and no longer healthy. My school allowance relies on my grandmother monthly elderly pension, which is not enough.

I tried to find some work so I do not depend of my grandmother for money but I could not as I am too young. I decided to sell snacks at school. The sale was good but I had to put less and less time on it as I had to focus more on studying, especially when school examination period is near.

If I were granted a scholarship, I would spend it for my education, such as buying school supplies and for other school expenses. I will give some to my grandmother for safekeeping for emergency cases. I would like to thank all the kind people who provide scholarships to poor students like me. Thank you very much.

Mr. Apinan, Mathayom 2 (Grade 8), Ban Na Kham School, Bueng Kan Province

“Currently, I live with my father, stepmother and grandfather. Our family income is from rubber tapping. My grandfather is the main breadwinner but he is already old. My father cannot work much because of his crippled leg but he still takes on whatever odd jobs available. I always help my father to tap rubber trees after school.

Since the COVID-19 situation, the costs of daily supplies have been getting higher. We need to save even more for emergencies and for my further education. My father wants me to have a higher education so I can get good salary. He teaches me to be a good person and be helpful to others. In the future, I would like to have a stable job to help my family.

I hope that when you read this letter, you will consider providing me scholarship for my education. Thank you very much.

Provide scholarships to 150 lower secondary students for 2,000 baht per person only and assure them to move up to Grade 8 and 9 in the academic year 2022 without dropping out.

Covered students are studying in a small school in the northeast of Thailand who applied for scholarships to EDF Foundation for the past academic year 2021, but could not get the grants due to the shortfall in donations.

EDF Foundation has partnered with taejai.com to raise funds for this group of underprivileged children for the upcoming academic year 2022 to encourage them and help support their education until at least Grade 9 without dropping out from school and to alleviate the burden of their families in the plight of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Problems and solutions

Although access to basic education is better than in the past because of free education policy, the problem of "poverty" is still a big hindrance for many children living in rural areas who cannot afford other costs and expenses relating to education. As a result, these children are at risk of dropping out from schools. Moreover, this long-standing correlation between poverty and educational inequality are also major obstacles to the development of the nation's human resources.

According to the Equitable Education Fund (EEF) report in Year 2021, children in poor families remain victims of all educational risks, such as having low chance of getting education, risk of dropping out and having low academic achievement. This means that the chance of continuing to higher education is close to none. They are more susceptible to many socio-economic risks, such as being relegated as unskilled worker with low income, having untimely family at school age and even getting involved in anti-social or unlawful activities.

EDF started the scholarship program for underprivileged children in 1988 in Udon Thani province as a pilot project. Forty-one students received the scholarships in the first year of operation. Currently, EDF has been providing scholarships — with the generous and good-hearted support from Thais and foreigners living in Thailand and abroad — to more than 400,000 underprivileged students in 5,600 schools covering 61 provinces nationwide.

In 2021 academic year, more than 10,000 scholarships applications for junior high school students were sent to EDF but EDF could only provide scholarships to 8,000 students. There are still more than 2,000 students who need to advance to Grade 7 in this academic year but could not due to insufficient funds.

EDF aims to provide educational support for these group of students by helping them cover educational expenses for school supplies and uniforms so they can complete their study until at least Grade 9 without dropping out. This would also ease the burden on their parents facing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic such as lower income or limited work opportunities.

Case studies of students needing scholarships

Hello, my name is Patcharapa, 12 years old and studying in Matthayom 1 (Grade 7) in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

I live with my father and mother. My parents work as ordinary laborer; cutting sugarcane, collecting corn and cassava. They have unstable income. No work means no income.

Sometimes I have to stop going to school and help my mother to earn extra money for my family and for my educational expenses.

I go to school by bicycle for a distance of about 5 kilometers. The road from home to school is very difficult, especially when it rains heavily forcing me to skip school. Sometimes, I was lucky as I could share ride in a motorcycle of my friends' parents on the way to school.

I promise myself and my parents that I will be patient and will study hard in order to have a good job in the future and have stable income to take care of my parents.

Please help me complete my school education.

If I received a scholarship, I will make sure to spend it wisely for necessary school supplies such as notebooks, pens, school uniforms and books. If there is money left, I will definitely save it for future education

Please allow me to thank in advance the person who will give me a scholarship. I promise that I will study hard, be a good girl and I will not disappoint my parents, my teachers and the generous people who will give me a scholarship support. Thank you very much.

Project Implementation Process

1) Be students who are studying in the lower secondary school level.

2) Poor family with an annual income lower than 50,000-70,000 baht.

3) Not being a child of a government official, state enterprise employee, state local employees or permanent employees.

4) Be enthusiastic about studying, well-behaved. Be responsible for their own duties and contribute themselves for the benefit of the society. Academic grade is not considered for awarding scholarships.

June 2022: EDF closes fundraising period for academic year 2022.
